To better accommodate the larger crowds we've been seeing in recent years, we moved both day's activities to the Mahantongo Fire Company, located on Main Road, in Pitman. Moderately priced lunches and refreshments were available. Sign-in and genealogy sessions began at 11:00am. Members of various branches of the family were at hand to help in your research. Avice Morgan Hepler, author of The Hepler Family History was available to assist. It was a time to get acquainted with out of town visitors! Wecome remarks were given by President William Paul. The Dopehock Sangor Choir...Penna Dutch Dialect Chorus from Berks County entertained. A good old fashioned hoe down followed. We invited people who would not be available for Sunday's Call of States to offer their comments and views. The Saturday Night Catered Dinner began at 6:00pm followed by a talk by our own James "Jolly Jim" Hepler, Gatz, PA on the importance of family values.
As has been our tradition, we all met at the Zion Cemetery on Sunday morning to pay tribute to our Hepler ancestors, especially Revolutionary War partriot brothers Jacob, Christopher, Casper Jr. and George. Leanne Toth, a Hepler cousin, was the keynote speaker. Click here to read her inspirational speech. Local Rifle and Color Guard units gave their salute.
The day continued with lunch served at the Mahantongo Fire House, followed by our special anniversary gathering. Speakers were Dr. Don Yoder, who talked about our ancestors, and Doris Bingen, a former resident of Lomersheim who share with us what it was like to live in the town of our ancestors. Doris and her husband Keith were married in the same church as our Casper & Susanna were married in 1742. Click Here to visit the Evangelische Kirchengemeinde Lomersheim church website. 12 states and three countries participated during our popular Call of States - a time when each state is called in alphabetical order, and Heplers from all over come to introduce themselves. Musical entertainment was provided as well, we held our "Mystery Auction", and many said their good-byes as they prepared to return to their homes.
